I offer innumerable humble obeisances at the lotus feet of the all-respected Shrila Tirtha Goswami Maharaja, who is a complete manifestation of Shri Guru tattva and a beloved associate of the Supreme Lord.

May he forgive my numerous offenses committed out of ignorance or laziness. May he accept the sincere feeling of deep attraction that I have for him.

He was very kind and gentle to us, Russian devotees, when we lived and traveled with him. He was strict and emphatic when he noticed inappropriate behavior of his followers or denounced Mayavada teachings. He showed unparalleled patience, explaining to us the subtleties of Vaishnava siddhanta and sad-acar. 

In his dealings with senior Vaishnavas of our Guru-varga, we saw his respectfulness and meekness. He never complained of physical discomfort and humbly accepted the circumstances around him as the will of Bhagavan. He graciously and kindly asked how I was doing and blessed me for all-encompassing service to Shri Krishna. He could perform some miracle, was not afraid to seem funny, sometimes made subtle jokes or spoke in a whisper so that others would not hear.

It is impossible to list all his spiritual qualities. This is my greatest Fortune — meeting and associating with His Divine Grace, whose irresistible transcendental charm has forever tied me to the feet of Gaudiya Vaishnavas. As much as I have strength, I will perform Puja to Him every day and pronounce His Name! May you bless me with this, o holy Vaishnavas!

His Lessons in Identifying an Imitation Sadhu

Once during Harikatha, Srila Gurudev narrated his own experience from a long time ago.  H e was in Agra with the prachar party. He explained that sometimes they did kirtan in a park near Taj Mahal. Usually when in Agra, Guru Maharaj and the devotees were welcomed by Matura Prasad Agrawal. He was a wealthy gentleman who owned oil mills. He had a lot of faith in Guru Maharaj and extended an open invitation to visit his house for Harikatha and kirtan anytime.   On this particular occasion, Guru Maharaj went to Agra without informing Matura Prasad. When he reached his home, he saw four babajis doing kirtan. Without making his presence known, he left. Firstly, I offer flowers at his lotus feet and humbly pray to him to please show mercy and accept the flowers offered to him by this fallen one. Just as the appearance day of the Lord himself is extremely holy, his devotee’s appearance day is equally as holy.
