A Drum Shattering Kirtan

We would like to offer our unlimited prostrated dandavat pranams to Srila Guru Maharaj, His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj. 

In 1998, by the mercy of Sri Sri Radha-Krsna, we were able to have the most wonderful darshan of Srila Guru Maharaj.  

“Krsna krpate Guru mile,
  Guru krpate Krsna mile”

In this manner, we met His Divine Grace. Srila Guru Maharaj is a personification of love and affection and treated everyone as his own.   Subsequently we were fortunate to have his darshan on several occasions and finally had the opportunity to serve Srila Guru Maharaj at our place. 

The most amazing pastime that will always be in our hearts is Srila Guru Maharaj’s ecstatic kirtans. Most importantly, Lord Nrsimha’s kirtan. In our experience, we had never heard such an overpowering and heart rendering kirtan. It was as though the Lord Himself descended, and Srila Guru Maharaj was completely absorbed. 

Srila Guru Maharaj got up from the Vyasasan and climbed up on it with his danda. The kirtan got louder, and each syllable Srila Guru Maharaj uttered was so full of emotion. We had never seen this before. Devotees all around stood up and were engaged in it fully, so much so that the drums broke. It was amazing and real.

Srila Guru Maharaj was able to draw our senses and engage them in serving the Lord. He was teaching us through his example. That day was a very memorable day for us and till this day, it is still ever-fresh. 

Guru never leaves us. Guru always continues to guide us in the right direction and safely brings us to the lotus feet of Vaisnavas. This is exactly what Srila Guru Maharaj is doing and will continue to do so.  

We are ever indebted for all the teachings and instructions that Srila Guru Maharaj imparted to us and we offer this prayer to his divine lotus feet. 

sei se parama bandhu, sei pita mata
sri krsna-carane yei prema-bhakti-data
sakala janme pita-mata sabe paya 
krsna guru nahi mile, bhajaha hiyaya

“Under ordinary circumstances one own’s father and mother are worshipable. But in every species one gets a father and mother. Far rarer is to get Guru and Krsna. The spiritual master can bestow prema-bhakti to those who attain his mercy. Therefore he is the topmost father, mother, and friend of everyone.”

Guru Mahārāja is not an ordinary person; he is sent by the Supreme Lord to rescue all of us. In the office, if we are working in one place, we may be deputed to another place to do some work. He Accepts Every Circumstance With Utmost Humility

I heard something very deep and nice from a devotee that I met in Switzerland. He told me about how he had been staying at a temple there while Guru Mahārāja was visiting.  He said that the maṭha-in-charge expressed his desire that Gurudeva speak about Bhāgavatam. But then an order came that he was not allowed to speak there. In the room where the Bhāgavatam reading was, there was a young boy,. He was maybe only three months in the maṭha and recently came out of a completely material life, eating meat, smoking, etc. Anyway, he was the only one who had permission to speak about Bhāgavatam. And what did Guru Mahārāja do? He entered the room, bowed down to this boy and he sat in front of this boy and listened to his Bhāgavatam reading. This is his humbleness. Capture It in Your Heart

In 2005, I decided to visit Jagannāth Puri for Ratha-yātrā. It was my first visit to any maṭha after harināma . The first thing I did was to equip myself with a film SLR camera anticipating interesting moments and visuals. Every year from then on, the camera always accompanied me, so much so that most of the time, I used to take snapshots more than actually participating. In 2010 or maybe 2011, I was staying in Mumbai. A few devotees wanted to purchase a camera for the maṭha-sevā , and, supposing I knew a bit about cameras, I accompanied them along for the purchase. Some research was done, and we picked up a Canon SLR and a couple of lenses. Soon after that, we went off to Jagannāth Puri. We were excited about the visit.
