Recalling His Gurudeva's Mystical Pastimes

Once Srila Gurudeva mentioned to me that His Gurudeva, His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhav Goswami Maharaj is not an ordinary human being. He is a personal associate of Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna.

He said that my Gurudeva, Paramaradhyatam Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhav Goswami Maharaj was once engaged in preaching programs across Assam (a state in India.) One of our Godbrothers requested Him to come and perform shraddha (ceremony ritual to pay homage to departed souls) of his deceased father. Although his father was not a devotee, his son felt he would be greatly benefited if his Gurudeva conducted this ceremony.

Gurudeva replied after referring to His schedule that He would be in Kolkata at that time, where preaching programs would be going on. He said that He will send some competent person or devotee for the ceremony. Again, the disciple politely requested to his Gurudeva to personally attend the ceremony.

Srila Gurudeva explained that during the preaching programs in Kolkata, His Gurudeva called him, Pujyapad Krishna Keshav Brahmacari (one of His godbrothers,) and Sri Mangal Nilay Prabhu to go to Assam. The train to Assam was delayed and they could not reach the function on time. When they were bit far from the house of the devotee who had invited them.

Our Srila Gurudeva explained that Srila Mangal Nilay Prabhu said that it was not nice that they did not wait for us and concluded the program. He thought they shall not go there now. Srila Gurudeva said initially he agreed, but then thought about what they will say when their Gurudeva when he will ask about the program. After all, the delay was not their doing, but because of the train. Srila Krishna Keshav Prabhu agreed, so they went to the devotee’s house.

Upon arrival, our Gurudeva explained, they saw that the function was over, and everyone was washing their hands after honoring prasadam. The devotees were pleased to see them and asked them why they didn't come earlier with Sri Madhav Maharaj. Srila Keshav Prabhu explained that there had been a program scheduled in Kolkata Math, so Sri Madhav Maharaj could not come and has sent them in his place. The devotees in the house stood stunned.

The godbrother who was hosting then came forward and asked him what was he saying? Srila Gurudeva came here! He gave a discourse, performed the ceremony, and has just left after honoring prasadam.

Srila Gurudeva explained to us that he was stunned and began wondering how it was possible. He described how the host took them around and pointed out where Srila Gurudeva sat to give a lecture, where He performed the ceremony, where He honored prasadam, and so on.

After they bathed, honored prasadam, performed sankirtan in the evening, and left Assam for Kolkata the next day. Once they reached Kolkata, they asked the resident devotees in the math, who was giving a lecture yesterday?

All answered that Srila Gurudeva and other sannyasi devotees gave lectures. Then they inquired if their Srila Gurudeva went away for 2-3 days. The answer was negative. They were informed that two days back, Srila Gurudeva not only gave a lecture but lead Sankirtan as well. They were of course very surprised.

After keeping the luggage in their respective rooms, they went to meet Gurudeva. After they offered obeisances, their Srila Gurudeva inquired about the trip, program, etc.

Srila Gurudeva explained to his Gurudeva about how their train had been delayed, and by the time they reached, the program was already over. Srila Gurudeva conveyed to his Gurudeva that they had heard from the devotees there that you had come and performed the ceremony, gave lecture, etc.

Our Gurudeva told that He smiled, but did not reply. Again, our Gurudeva asked how it could be possible that you were performing Sankirtan in Kolkata with devotees as well as performing the ceremony in Assam at the same time?

Gurudeva did not reply for a while, our Gurudeva explained, but after some time he spoke, "You have traveled for so long. Freshen up and honor prasadam."
