He Does Not Accept Ill Words From Anyone

Srila Gurudev told us about when he was in a college either in Cooch Behar or in Cotton College, Guwahati. While he was there, his roommate spoke roughly to him every day. He was not very senior to Gurudev, only about one year. But Gurudev was such a sadhu that he said nothing. He never spoke ill words towards anyone.

Persons who have a tendency to lord over others often speak continuously. When they find a simple person who doesn’t argue, they just keep speaking abusive words and don’t stop. Only if someone argues back, they may shut the mouth. Yet Guru Maharaj never reacted or said a word. Every day, that person continued going on like that.

Srila Gurudev told us that one day when his roommate started with this, he extended his cloth forward and told that person, “I am collecting all your abusive words and giving them back to you. I give these back.”

On several occasions, Srila Gurudev offered to shift to another room but the roommate would not allow him to do so, probably for a simple reason that he could not find such a roommate ever having such a high level of patience. Once when Srila Gurudev shifted his luggage in the absence of his roommate, he forcefully brought him back to his room.

Later, when they went separate ways, Srila Gurudev told us, "That person showed so much love to me, even now he loves me so much."

Why? Because of Srila Gurudev’s extraordinary attitude. We say that a person has no love for me, that person hates me, but actually, we make our own friends and enemies. No one is to be blamed. This is such a nice attitude Guru Maharaj has to each and every person.

Even though that person was speaking so many abusive words, Guru Maharaj did not utter a single word. How much can someone go on speaking ill words when the other person is not protesting? One day they will have to surrender.

That is our Guru Maharaj’s exemplary character. He never talked back to his father or anyone superior. That's why he was the darling son of his father. The other children might say, "Father I’m hungry, my cloth is torn, please give me this...” but here is a boy who never asked anything of his father. His father had so much love for him, he took care of everything without his son having to ask.
